Foods to Avoid

A word about FOODS to be careful with during your orthodontic treatment

During your orthodontic treatment there are some foods that you will need to avoid or be more careful eating. Some foods can cause damage of your braces or appliances. This could result in extra appointments needed for repairs and even an extension of the time required to complete your treatment. In addition, some foods may tend to get stuck around braces increasing your chance of developing decay or discoloration of your teeth.

Foods to avoid entirely:

Sticky foods such as caramels, Tootsie Rolls, Starburst, Laffy Taffy, regular chewing gum, Fruit Roll Ups, any kind of Gummy candy.

Foods to be careful with (smaller bites, one at a time etc.):

Popcorn, nuts, harder chips like Fritos, Doritos, hard pretzels (opt for the skinnier ones), bagels, pizza crust

*Do not crunch on Ice, hard candy or suckers
*Cut up whole apples
*Try to drink less regular soda and other sugary drinks, especially between meals.
