The bite plate should be worn 23 hours per day. It must be worn while eating.
Reasons Bite Plate should be removed are:
1 hour a day – this will keep the tissue on the roof of the mouth healthy
When brushing teeth
Sports that require wearing a mouth guard
Vomiting
Swimming in a lake or pond
The first 24 hours there may be excess saliva since the brain thinks there is food in the mouth, this will go away.
Speech will be different. It will improve the more you talk – try reading out loud.
When your bite plate is out of your mouth for any of the above reasons it must be kept in a container with room temperature water. If not it will become dry and not fit comfortably. If subjected to extreme temperature it may distort.
Brush both sides carefully with toothpaste and toothbrush regularly. Soak 1 time per week in Efferdent if needed. It can also be soaked in mouthwash during the 1 hour a day the bite plate is out. When brushing your bite plate, fill the sink with a small amount of room temperature water. This way, if it falls out of your hand, it will not break.
No hard or sticky foods like gum, tootsie rolls, hard candy, nuts, pretzels allowed while wearing your bite plate. These can cause the bite plate to break or crack.
If your bite plate needs to be replaced because of loss, breakage or not fitting properly due to not wearing as instructed there will be a replacement fee of $140.00.
Keep away from household pets.
If your bite plate becomes loose or does not fit well, call the office to schedule an appointment.
